During a 4th grade school year, students will receiveinstruction and be assessed in the following areas:
MATH
• Students learn to solve multi-digit addition and subtraction problems using place value understanding to a million
• Students create equivalent fractions, and order and compare fractions
• Students add and subtract fractions
• Students represent and interpret data on a line plot
• Students learn about the relationship between factors and multiples
• Students read, write, and compare decimals
• Students read, write, compare and round multi-digit whole numbers to show place value understanding
• Students use the four operations(+,-, x, +) with whole numbers to solve problems
• Students solve problems involving measurement
• Students understand, draws, and identifies lines, angles, and 2D figures
SCIENCE
• Students construct an argument that plants and animals have structures that help them survive
• Students observe and measures changes to land caused by erosion
• Students research energy sources and how their use affects the environment
• Students design, tests and refines a device that changes energy from one form to another
• Students develop a model that shows how waves can cause objects to move
• Students explore and compare different ways to send information using patterns or code
READING
• Students use grade level phonics and word solving to accurately read texts
• Students read grade level text fluently and with expression
• Students read and understand grade level text, self-correcting, and rereading for meaning when necessary
• Students read and comprehend grade level text by remembering important information and carrying it forward (summarizing)
• Students read and comprehend grade level text by inferring, predicting, making connections and adding new knowledge to what they already know
• Students read and think critically about grade level text by analyzing and critiquing a variety of genres
• Students demonstrate comprehension at grade level when read to and across genres and subjects
WRITING
• Students produce focused writing appropriate for task, purpose, and audience
• Students develop and strengthen writing through planning, revising, editing and rewriting
• Students use evidence from a range of texts to support analysis, reflection, and research
• Students demonstrate a consistent use of grade level grammar, usage, and conventions
• Students use grade appropriate spelling patterns in written work
SOCIAL STUDIES
• Students understand that history is an interpretation from a perspective, not necessarily the whole story about the past
• Students learn that exploration and discovery are part of human nature
• Students learn that throughout history, people have migrated for similar and different reasons
• Students learn that state citizenship comes with certain rights and responsibilities
