One of the challenges that I have to pay extra attention to is sorting out what is "me" thing and what is an "we" thing. That is to say, what experiences, hurdles, frusterations, etc. are part of my unique experience or are part of our collective experience.  Conversly, what skills, talents, vision is unique or shared.

As with the massive technological leap that was the printing press, the potential benefit to society that computers (with their ever increasing speed and capacity) and the internet represent are prodigious. I do not think it's a overstatement to say that these technologies represent what can only be seen as humanity's first global central nervous system. This is why, when I see how far we are from these potentials, I am both excited and dismayed.

Excited because not only do I see clearly the work ahead, but it's the work that I'm driven to do.

Dismayed when thinking about the what and why of the obstacles.

In my mind, with full-blown A.I. right on our heels, reaching this potential is paramount. In my mind, it's the difference between us heading towards a Star Trek future or a Hunger Games future. Hyperbolic, I know, but worth thinking about none the less.
